Kitchen Handle: Bottle Opener

Moen produces a variety of Single Handle faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the more common handle assemblies referred to as a Bottle Opener. This mechanism was introduced in the 1960's and was used on a select group of products through 1996. The characteristics of the mechanism include a handle rotation range of 360 degrees and a cup cap or a disk cap on the top. This faucet style utilizes a 1225 cartridge.

Preparation:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.

Cup Style Cap

Disassembly Cup Style Handle:

While holding the lever (#2) in place, grab the cap (#1) and pull upwards to remove
Use a Phillips screwdriver unscrew the Phillips screw (#3), lift to remove the handle (#2).
Using pliers, unscrew and remove the retainer nut (#4).

Disassembly Disk Cap Style Handle:

While holding the lever (#2) in place, pry the handle cap (#1) up and remove.
Use a Phillips screwdriver unscrew the Phillips screw (#3), lift to remove the handle (#2).
Using pliers, unscrew and remove the retainer nut (#4).

Assembly:

1. Securely hand tighten the retainer nut (#4).

2. The bottom end of the silver lever (#2) must be hooked to the flat edge is under the ridge on the retainer nut (#4) as shown in the photo below. * Some levers will have a half circular shape, the installation is the same.

To best accomplish this, hold the handle body (#2) over the retainer nut (#4) and push the silver lever (#2) upwards to the on position. This will allow the bottom of the silver lever (#2) to stick out from the bottom of the handle body (#2). You will then be able to catch this under the ridge on the retainer nut (#4) and bring the handle (#2) forward. This view shows the lever (#2) correctly installed at an angle with the back end wrapped under the ridge of the retainer nut (#4).

3. Screw the Phillips screw (#3) back into the faucet. Place handle cap back onto the faucet.
