Single Handle 4" Centerset Knob: Top Cap (Prior to 2009)

Moen produces a variety of single handle bathroom faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the more common handle assemblies used on the Villeta product line referred to as a Top Cap Knob. This version was introduced in 1999, and utilizes a 1225 cartridge.

Disassemble:

  1. Carefully pull the cap (#1) out of the handle (#3).
  2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the handle screw (#2). Lift off the handle (#3).
  3. Unthread the handle stop (#5).
  4. Lift off the collar (#7) and then lift off the plastic washer (#6).

If you need to replace the cartridge (#10) or the pivot stop (#8), confirm the water is off and use a flathead screwdriver to pull out the retainer clip (#9) from the back of the pivot stop (#8). Pull the pivot stop (#8) and washer (#4) off the faucet. See article 1225 Cartridge: Single Handle Bathroom Faucets (Prior to 2009) for replacing the cartridge (#10).

Assemble:

Make sure the notch on the flat side of the top of the cartridge stem is facing forward. See Figure A.

If the cartridge or pivot stop (#10) were replaced you must first place the washer (#11) on the cartridge stem. Next, slide the pivot stop (#10) on with the tooth at the back of the faucet. Slide the retainer clip (#9) into the slot on the pivot stop (#10). If you encounter any resistance, the cartridge may not be properly aligned, see Installing a Cartridge Clip (1200 and 1225 Cartridge) for additional details.

  1. Set the plastic washer (#6) onto the faucet assembly.
  2. Place the collar (#7) back on with the lip at the back of the faucet.
  3. Thread and tighten the handle stop (#5).
  4. Place the handle (#3) onto the faucet.
  5. Using a Phillips screwdriver, thread and tighten the Phillips screw (#2).
  6. Snap cap (#1) into the handle (#3).
