Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Lever: Top Cap

Moen produces a variety of two handle wide spread bathroom faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the more common handle assemblies referred to as a Top Cap Style Lever. This faucet style utilizes the 1224 cartridge.

Preparation:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
Recommended Tools : Phillips Screwdriver

Disassembly:

Gently pry the cap (#1) off.
Unthread the Phillips screw (#2) and remove. If your faucet does not have a Phillips screw under the cap, your faucet is a threaded hub handle assembly. See article Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Lever: Threaded Hub.
Lift the handle (#3) off.

Assembly:

The handles must be assembled in in the off position. To accomplish this, rotate the stem extensions (#4) all the way clockwise for the hot side, or counter-clockwise for the cold side.
Set the handle (#3) on top of the faucet in the off position.
Thread and tighten the Phillips screw (#2).
Push the cap (#1) back in the top of the handle (#3).
