Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Knob: Flat Cap (Prior to 2013)

Moen produces a variety of two handle wide spread bathroom faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the more common handle assemblies referred to as a Flat Cap Knob (Prior to 2013). This faucet style utilizes the 1224 cartridges.

Preparation:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
Recommended Tools: Phillips Screwdriver

Starting by prying the cap out of the knob to verify which version you are working with. There will either be the head of a Phillips screw (Version 1) or the bottom of a Phillips screw (Version 2).

Version 1

Disassembly:

Using a Phillips screwdriver, unthread and remove the Phillips screw (#1).
Lift the handle (#3) off.

To replace the cartridge see article 1224 Cartridge: Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Valves (Prior to 2000) or 1224 Cartridge:Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Valves (2000-2014).

Assembly:

Set the knob (#3) on top of the stem extension (#4).
Thread and tighten the Phillips screw (#2).
Push the cap (#1) back in the top of the knob (#3)

Version 2

Disassembly:

While holding the knob (#2) stationary, unscrew the base of the escutcheon (#3) counter-clockwise to remove. The knob (#2) and escutcheon (#3) will come off together.

To replace the cartridge see, 1224 Cartridge: Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Valves (Prior to 2000) or 1224 Cartridge:Two Handle 8" Wide Spread Valves (2000-2014).

Assembly:

Set the on knob (#2) on top of the stem extension (#4).
While holding the knob (#2) stationary, thread the base of the escutcheon (#3) clockwise to tighten.
Push the cap (#1) back in the top of the knob (#3).
