Single Handle Kitchen Faucet Installed After November 2006

How To Operate a Moen Kitchen Faucet Without A Handle

This guide will explain how to operate a Moen faucet with a broken or missing handle. If the faucet has been disassembled or is in the process of being serviced, follow the guidelines below to see what is required in order to safely operate the faucet.

Tools Needed: Pliers

If your faucet does not have a white plastic or stainless steel stem, please visit the How to Operate My Kitchen Faucet Without a Handle for all other kitchen faucet choices.

4000-A Blue Cartridge Body With A White Plastic Stem

  2. Pull the stem forward to turn the faucet off.

Use pliers to control the temperature:

  1. Rotate the stem clockwise for hot water
  2. Rotate counterclockwise for cold water.

For Sidemount Handles:

Do not turn you water on if the cartridge nut (see image below) is missing or not securely in place. The cartridge nut may be black plastic or brass.

For Top Mount Handles:

Make sure the cartridge nut (see image below) is still threaded onto the faucet and the upper bearing washer (see image below) is in position on the valve body.

If the decorative dome has been removed, make sure the upper bearing washer is positioned on the valve body. The upper bearing washer is designed to hold the faucet spout in place. It is plastic and designed with a split in it for easy installation. Secure the upper bearing washer into the top of the spout so the gap in the upper bearing washer is around the tab on the black valve body.  To ensure the upper bearing washer is seated properly, gently pull upwards on the spout. If the upper bearing washer is seated properly, the spout will not lift off. Below will show how the upper bearing washer should be positioned on the valve.
