1255 Cartridge: Single Handle Bathroom Faucets (After 2009)

This article will explain the process of replacing the internal water flow cartridge in a single handle lavatory faucet. The information will include details about the tools needed and the method of removing the cartridge.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Pliers
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit solutions.moen.com and select the type you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on handle assemblies associated with that style of product.

Disassembly:

  1. Use an adjustable wrench to unthread and remove the black hexagonal retainer nut (#1).
  2. To remove the cartridge (#2), pull up on stainless steel stem.

It is recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#3) prior to installing the new cartridge (#2). See article Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Assembly:

  1. The new cartridge (#2) will only fit in the valve body (#3) one way. Line up the three vertical ribs on the cartridge (#2) with the three vertical grooves in the valve body (#3) and insert the cartridge (#2).
  2. Using pliers, thread the retainer nut (#1) back in.
