4000/40002 Cartridge: Kitchen Faucet

The 4000/40002 water flow cartridge is built in directly below the faucet handle and controls both volume and temperature. It is commonly used in Moen single handle faucets produced after 2005 (date varies based on style and model).

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Pliers
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit and select the type of faucet you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on handle assemblies associated with that style of product.

Moen manufactures many types of faucets that use the 4000/40002 cartridge. The different faucet categories are based on where the on/off handle is located. Refer to the images below based on your handle location.

Removing The Cartridge

1. Using pliers, unthread the brass hexagonal retainer nut (#1) counter-clockwise.

2. Pull the cartridge (#2) out of the faucet.

Note: It is highly recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#4) before installing the new cartridge (#1). See article Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Installing The Cartridge

1. Line up the bottom of the cartridge (#2) with the inside of the valve body. The cartridge (#2) will only fit in one way (See Images).

2. Using pliers, thread the brass hexagonal retainer nut (#1) back in.
