Bathroom Faucet Drain: Modifying A Non Overflow Drain

Can I modify a non overflow style drain to be used in a sink with an overflow? Overflow drains have a hole in the upper drain assembly that lines up to a channel in an overflow style sink. This prevents sinks from overflowing with water when the drain is closed or clogged. If an incompatible style of drain is installed, water can leak under the sink. If the sink has an overflow and the drain does not, Moen does not recommend modifying the drain. You can replace the drain with an overflow drain:

  • Push Down Drain: 186478 (multiple finishes available, see Moen.com for more details)
  • All Metal Drain: 10790 (multiple finishes available, see Moen.com for more details)
  • All Plastic Drain: 151018 (multiple finishes available, see Moen.com for more details)
