Bathroom Faucet Drain: Modifying An Overflow Drain

Can I modify an overflow style drain to be used in a non overflow sink? Overflow drains have a hole in the upper drain assembly that lines up to a channel in an overflow style sink. This prevents sinks from overflowing with water when the drain is closed or clogged. If an incompatible style of drain is installed, water can leak under the sink. If the sink does not have an overflow, Moen does not recommend modifying the drain. You can replace the drain with a non overflow drain, service kit # 140780 (available in Chrome, Brushed Bronze, Brushed Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze and Antique Bronze).
