Cartridge Replacement: 1258 Cartridge

This article will walk you through the process of replacing the internal water flow cartridge(s) in a Roman Tub Filler valve installed after 2017 . The information will include details about the tools needed and the method of removal.

Preparation: 


Compare the two versions of the partial splined stem extensions with the version you are working with for the correct instructions. See Cartridge Replacement: 1248 Handle Mechanism: Splined Stem Extension  if your stem extension has splines all the way around the top exterior.

Tools Required: Flathead Screwdriver, Needle-Nose Pliers and/or Removal Tool 14272

Removal Tool 14272

Disassembly:

  1. Use the removal tool 14272 to unscrew the cartridge nut (#1).
  2. Use needle-nose pliers to pull the cartridge (#2) out.

It is recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#3) prior to installing the new cartridge (#2). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Assembly:

  1. Align the tabs on both sides of the the cartridge (#2) with the recessed indentations on both sides of the valve body (#3) and slide the cartridge (#2) into the valve body (#3).
  2. Use the removal tool to thread the cartridge nut (#1) into the valve body (#3).

 

Needle-Nose Pliers

Disassembly:

  1. Insert needle nose pliers into the valve body (#3) so they are in the recesses in the cartridge nut (#1). Unscrew the cartridge nut (#1) counter-clockwise to remove.
  2. Use needle-nose pliers to pull the cartridge (#2) out.

It is recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#3) prior to installing the new cartridge (#2). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Assembly:

  1. Align the tabs on both sides of the the cartridge (#2) with the recessed indentations on both sides of the valve body (#3) and slide the cartridge (#2) into the valve body (#3).
  2. Place the cartridge nut (#1) into the valve body (#3). Insert needle-nose pliers into the valve body (#3) so they are in the recesses in the cartridge nut (#1). Thread the cartridge nut (#1) clockwise to install.

Tools Required: Flathead Screwdriver, Needle-Nose Pliers, Removal Tool 14272

Removal Tool 14272

Disassembly:

  1. Use the removal tool 14272 to unscrew the cartridge nut (#1).
  2. Use pliers to pull out the stem extension (#2). The stem extension (#2) and cartridge (#3) will pull out together.
  3. To disconnect the stem extension (#2) from the cartridge (#3), push on the side of the stem extension (#2) that has 5 splines to create a gap.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver in the gap to pry the stem extension (#2) and cartridge (#3) apart.

It is recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#4) prior to installing the new cartridge (#3). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Assembly:

  1. Line up the flat side of the stem extension (#2) with the hole in the cartridge (#3).

  2. Snap the stem extension (#2) into the top of the cartridge.
  3. Line up the tab on the cartridge with the notch in the valve body and slide the cartridge into the valve body.
  4. Use the removal tool to thread the cartridge nut into the valve body.
  5. Rotate the stem extension (#1) to the "off" position (clockwise for hot, counter clockwise for cold) until it stops.
