How to Operate a Single Handle Kitchen Faucet without a Handle (After November 2006)

This guide will explain how to operate a Moen faucet with a broken or missing handle. If the faucet has been disassembled or is in the process of being serviced, follow the guidelines below to see what is required in order to safely operate the faucet.

Preparation: 

Recommended Tools: Pliers

  If your faucet does not have a white plastic or stainless steel stem, please see article How to Operate a Single Handle Kitchen Faucet without a Handle (Prior to November 2006).

4000-A Blue Cartridge Body With A White Plastic Stem

You cannot turn the water on to the faucet if the handle dome (#2) or the hexagonal cartridge nut (#3) is removed. The cartridge nut is not visible in Sidemount. 

Top Mount:

Use pliers to turn the water on and off:

  1. Push back on the white plastic stem to turn the water on.
  2. Pull the stem forward to turn the faucet off.

Use pliers to control the temperature:

  1. Rotate the stem clockwise for hot water
  2. Rotate counterclockwise for cold water.

You cannot turn the water on to the faucet if the dome (#2) or the hexagonal cartridge nut is removed. The cartridge nut is not visible in the pictures however it is located beneath the handle dome (#2).

Use Pliers to turn the water on and off :

  1. Push back on the stainless steel stem to turn the water on.
  2. Pull the stem forward to turn the faucet off.

Use pliers to control the temperature:

  1. Rotate the stem clockwise for hot water.
  2. Rotate counterclockwise for cold water.
