How to Operate a Two Handle Bathroom Faucet 8" To 16" Spread without a Handle

This guide will explain how to operate a Moen faucet with a broken or missing handle. If the faucet has been disassembled or is in the process of being serviced, follow the guidelines below to see what is required in order to safely operate the faucet.

If your faucet does not have two handles or does not measure 8"-16" from the center of the hot handle to the center of the cold handle, please visit solutions.moen.com and select the type of product you are repairing. The guide will contain specific information associated with that style of product.

Preparation:

Recommended Tools: Needle Nose pliers, #2 Phillips Screwdriver

WARNING: Do not turn your home water supply on if the cartridge nut (see image below) is missing or not securely in place.

Vertical Splines in Tact:

For the hot side: Use pliers to rotate the vertical splines clockwise for off and counter-clockwise for on.

For the cold side: Use pliers to rotate the vertical splines counter-clockwise for off and clockwise for on.

Vertical Splines Cracked or Broken: Check for Phillips screw.

Phillips Screw:

Remove the Phillips head screw and plastic stem with vertical splines. Make sure the plastic retainer nut is threaded down into the valve. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to reach the stem of the cartridge.

No Phillips Screw:

Find the side of the extension that has five ribs at the top. Push on the side with five ribs. Using pliers, gently pull up on the extension to remove it.
