Shower Handle: PosiTemp Valve- Lever Type 2

Moen produces a variety of single handle shower trims. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the more common handle assemblies referred to as a Lever 2. This is for a Positemp Valve System, and it utilizes a 1222 cartridge.

Disassembly:

1. Remove the handle set screw (#1) by inserting the 7/64" Hex wrench into the hole underneath the handle (#2) to unscrew the set screw (#1). Remove the handle (#2).

2. Remove the handle adapter (#4) by unthreading the Phillips screw (#3).

3. Remove the temperature limit stop (#5) and key stop (#6). On select models, there may also be a metal wavy washer between the limit stop (#5) and the key stop (#6) that will also pull off.

4. Slide the stop tube (#7) off.

To replace the cartridge, see article 1222 Cartridge: Single Handle Shower- PosiTemp.

Assembly:

1. Confirm that the cartridge clip is installed and rotate the stem of the cartridge so the small notch is facing down.

2. If your model has a metal wavy washer, this goes between the limit stop (#5) and the key stop (#6). See Figure A

  •  Note: The metal wavy washer is not shown in the key legend.

3. Slide the stop tube (#7) on with the raised ridge at the top.

4. Install the key stop (#6) into the stop tube (#7) with the raised ridge at the top and then install the temperature limit stop (#5) into the key stop (#6).

5. Slide the handle adapter (#4) onto the stem of the cartridge.

6. Screw the Phillips screw (#3) back into the center of the handle adapter (#4).

7. Position the handle (#2) back onto the handle adapter (#4). Turn the handle (#2) to the off position to reinstall the 7/64" hex screw (#1).

Note: If after testing you notice the hot and cold are reversed, see article How to Reverse Hot and Cold for a 1222 Cartridge.
