There are two basic ways a Monticello lever handle could be broken. This article will explain if new parts are required and how to perform the repair.

Preparation:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
Recommended Tools: Phillips Screwdriver

This handle breaks one of two ways. Review the following scenarios to determine which type you are currently working with.

Type 1: In this scenario, A and B is separated and part C is visibly cracked or broken. This will require a new handle adapter (C).

Type 2: In this scenario, A and B are separated and part C is in tact. This can be assembled without requiring new parts.

If the handle hub (B) is still attached to the faucet, you will need to remove it by rotating it counter-clockwise.

Assembly:

For re-assembly or replacing parts, follow the number of the parts in order starting with the Phillips screw (#1). There are three versions of the handles and handle parts. Compare the following images with the version you are working with.

We recommend rebuilding the handle on top of a Phillips screwdriver for ease of installation. If your handle repair is type 2, you will need to remove the Phillips screw from inside the body first.

Helpful Tip:

If when reassembling the handle and the screw won't tighten:

The handle elbow (the last part of the handle assembly) and the handle adapter (#3) interlock. When attaching the handle elbow, the internal splines on the handle elbow have to match up with the external splines on the handle adapter (#3).
