Can I install the U by Moen Smart Shower valve in an attic? Are there any concerns regarding the ambient temperature of the location of where the valve will be installed?

The power supply and valve must not be installed where the ambient temperature can exceed 104°F (40°C) or where freezing may occur.

Are there any layout considerations I need to be aware of before the controller is installed?
  • A flat area on the final shower surface of 10" wide by 6" high is required to mount the controller.
  • The controller needs to be located close enough to the valve to allow for adequate slack in the 30' data cable to accommodate a drip loop in the data cable.
  • The controller must not be installed where the ambient temperature may fall below 41°F or can exceed 158°F.

Operation

How many presets can you have for two outlet and four outlet SKUs?
Both the two outlet and the four outlet SKU's provide presets on the controller and up to 10 additional from the app.

Is this a pressure balanced valve?
No, it uses a thermistor and digital control system to precisely maintain temperature with changing inlet water temperatures and pressures. Although it is not considered pressure balancing, the user still receives similar benefits of temperature control and the valve meets applicable thermostatic safety codes.
What is the minimum water pressure needed for a digital valve?
20 PSI which is a code requirement. With the vertical spa, a minimum pressure of at least 40 psi is recommended for optimal performance and satisfaction.
Are there any issues with electricity and the chance of being shocked?
No, the U by Moen shower valve is actually designed so the water is isolated from the electronics. In addition, the system operates under low voltage (12V). All current is properly isolated and sealed (through the controller) and the product is third-party certified by IAPMO (cUPC) to the standards ASSE 1016/ASME A112.1016/CAS B 125.16, ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1, UL 1951 and CSA C22.2 Nos. 14 and 68.

A GFCI outlet will provide additional protection. The GFCI is an Earth Leakage Breaker that detects faults to ground. The current threshold is very low, typically 15mA, which means it will trip well before any risks could occur. Jetted tubs already require dedicated GFCIs (110V, 15-20A) for pump/motor and heaters
How does the valve work?
The controller sends the desired temperature to the valve. The valve then automatically adjusts the mix of hot and cold water using a thermistor and digital control system to precisely achieve and maintain the desired temperature even with changing inlet water temperatures and pressures.
What happens when a power outage occurs while shower is ON?

When the valve detects a power outage, the shower will safely turn off. If the optional battery backup is installed (service kit 179573), the shower will continue uninterrupted. The optional battery backup provide enough power for approximately two showers per day for three days with no Wi-Fi.

Does the U by Moen Smart shower valve have flow volume control?
No. The digital valve does not offer flow volume control. Flow volume is limited by the shower devices plumbed to the valve outlets.
Does the U by Moen Smart shower controller have a touch screen?
No. The controller is not a touch screen. The tactile buttons on the controller provide reliable operation in a shower environment.
How many outlets does the U by Moen Smart shower valve have?
There is a two outlet valve (S3102) and a four outlet valve (S3104).
What is the maximum hot water temperature?

The valve is factory set to have a maximum temperature of 115° F. The maximum temperature of the valve can be increased up to 120° F, or decreased using the Moen app.

Does the U by Moen Smart shower measure/display water usage during or after a shower?
The U by Moen shower does not measure/display water usage. Shower duration can be preset using the Moen app.
What is the maximum flow rate for two outlet and four outlet valves?
The max flow rate of the S3102 two-outlet valve is 9 gpm at 45 psi. However, the max flow rate of the S3104 four-outlet valve is 14 gpm at 45 psi. The maximum flow rate from any single outlet is 6 gpm at 45 psi.
Does the U by Moen Smart shower offer a warm-up mode? How does it work?

Yes. The warm-up mode can be enabled via the Moen mobile app. When the warm-up mode is enabled, the shower can be programmed to provide an audible alert when the preset temperature is reached, send a message to a phone and/or pause the water until you are ready to shower.

Can I use the U by Moen Smart shower during a power outage?
The U by Moen Smart shower can only be used during a power outage if the optional battery backup kit 179573 is connected to the valve. This battery backup will allow approximately two showers per day for three days with no WiFi.
Can the U by Moen Smart shower be used in locations where local codes require only a single outlet active?
Yes. The controller features a Water Saving Mode option which will only allow one outlet to be active at a time. This option can be enabled during the initial set-up of the controller.

Does the U by Moen Smart shower controller use batteries?

In the U.S., the average residential electricity rate is $0.0126 per KWH, so we are talking pennies per month to operate.
How do I know if the optional Battery Backup (service kit 179573) is connected to my valve? How will I know when the batteries need to be changed?
When the optional Battery Backup in service kit 179573 is installed, a white battery indicator in the upper right hand corner of the display will appear under normal use when the valve is running on AC power. In the event of a power outage, this indicator will appear when the shower in on. A red outline of the battery indicator indicates the batteries need to be changed.
Can I use one of the outlets to fill my tub?

Yes, one outlet can be used to fill a tub. An outlet icon on the controller can be changed to a tub spout if the app has be downloaded onto your phone and the controller is connected to the cloud/internet. This can be done in the "Settings" section of the app. Be aware that one outlet will produce a maximum of 6gpm at 45psi unrestricted on any one outlet, so this specification will need to be evaluated with the size of the tub in question.
