Handle Assembly and 1224 Cartridge: Two or Three Handle Shower- Threaded Hub

Moen produces a variety of two and three handle shower faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain how to service one of the more common handle assemblies and the 1224 interior flow cartridges.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Phillips Screwdriver, Pliers and/or Removal Tool 14272
  • We recommend covering the drain before beginning so to not loose any parts down the drain.

Disassembly:

  1. While holding the lever (#1) stationary, unscrew the base of the handle hub (#2) counter-clockwise to remove the complete handle.
  2. Unthread the Phillips screw (#3) using a Phillips screwdriver and remove the stem extension (#4).
  3. Remove the cartridge nut (#5)

    Using Pliers:

Insert needle nose pliers into the valve body (#7) so they are in the recesses in the cartridge nut (#5). Unscrew the cartridge nut (#5) counter-clockwise to remove.

    Using Removal Tool 14272:

Insert the removal tool into the valve body (#7) so that the tabs on the removal tool sit in the recesses i the cartridge nut (#5). Unthread the cartridge nut counter-clockwise to remove.

  4. Using pliers, grab the white stem of the cartridge (#6)  and pull the cartridge (#6) out.

We recommend cleaning and flushing the valve body (#7) prior to re-assembly, see Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Assembly:

  1. Align the tab on the side of the cartridge (#6) with the notch down inside the wall of the brass valve body (#7) and slide the cartridge (#6) into the valve body (#7).

  2. Tighten the cartridge nut (#5) using the removal tool or pliers.
  3. Slide the stem extension (#4) onto the stem of the cartridge (#6). Note: If the stem extension doesn't fit down or rotates 360 degrees, the stem of the cartridge may need to be adjusted.
  4. Rotate the stem extension (#4) to the "off" position (clockwise for hot, counter clockwise for cold) until it stops.
  5. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the Phillips screw (#3).
  6. Re-install the handle assembly facing the desired off position by holding the lever (#1) stationary, thread the base of the handle hub (#2) clockwise to install the complete handle.
