How to Convert a Shower Trim with a 145058 Adapter Kit

This article will explain how to tell if a current Moen shower valve can be converted to fit new Moen trim kits. It will help you determine which valve you have, what is needed and instructions on how to perform the conversion.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article  How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet .
  • Recommended Tools: Adapter Kit 145058, Phillips Screwdriver
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit solutions.moen.com and select the type you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on handle assemblies associated with that style of product.
  • The current valve installed must be a Standard Valve, see details below.

The Standard and Original Moentrol rough-in valves are visually different however they share some common features. These valves both have screws located at the bottom of the escutcheon plate. The handle operation for these valves is push/pull and rotate. It is important to determine which valve you are working with to confirm if your valve is able to accept new trim, see details below.

Original Moentrol Valve: The Original Moentrol Valve was introduced in the late 1960's and was available for a short period of time. The visual difference between the Original Moentrol Valve and the Standard Valve is the balancing spool (see red arrow) on the top of the Original Moentrol Valve. The Standard Valve does not have one. Although Moen no longer manufactures new trim kits to fit this valve, individual parts and trim pieces are available at 1-800-BUY-MOEN.

Standard Valve: The Standard valve was introduced in the 1960's and was used until the early 2000's. This valve does not have a balancing spool like the Original Moentrol Valve. If the 145058 Adapter Kit is purchased, new Moentrol trim kits (see requirements below) are available for this valve. See below for installing the 145058 Adapter Kit.
