How to Operate a Posi-Temp without a Handle

This guide will explain how to operate a Moen shower with a broken or missing handle. If the shower has been disassembled or is in the process of being serviced, follow the guidelines in this article to see what is required in order to safely operate the shower.

Recommended Tools: Pliers

This guide is for a single handle shower that the handle rotates to adjust temperature.  

Do not turn your home water supply on if the cartridge retainer clip (see image below) is missing or not securely in place.

Ensure the cartridge retainer clip is installed in the valve.

Use pliers to operate the water:

  1. Rotate counter-clockwise to turn the water on. When the water turns on it will start with cold water. As you continue rotating, the water will get hotter.
  2. Rotate clockwise to make the water colder and all the way clockwise to turn the water off.
