How to Remove a Push Button Diverter

This article will explain how to convert a single handle shower with a push button diverter on the escutcheon plate, to an updated style of tub spout using a lift rod diverter.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Push-Button Diverter Plug 101100, 7/8" Deep Well Socket or Pliers, Toothbrush, White Vinegar, Water
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit solutions.moen.com and select the type you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on handle assemblies associated with that style of product.
  • We recommend covering the drain before removing the handle so to not loose any parts down the drain.

Note: Removing the push-button diverter will allow you to install a standard diverting tub spout which is common in Moen tub and shower packages.

Disassembly:

  1. Place 1" deep well socket or pliers on the hex portion of the push-button diverter (#1) and unthread counter-clockwise to remove.

Assembly:

  1. Clean the inside of the diverter valve (#2) with a toothbrush and a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water.
  2. Thread the push button diverter plug 101100 (#3) into the diverter valve (#2) clockwise to install.
