How to Replace the 12639 or 136123 Stop Check Valve

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off - see article--How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools:
    • Phillips screwdriver
    • Models Prior to 2007-Snap Ring Pliers
    • Models After 2007-Needle Nose Pliers

*For the stop check valve replacement the exterior trim (handle and escutcheon back plate) must be removed. 

  • Handle- Moen produces a variety of shower handle styles, which are each removed differently. To identify your handle and review information on removal, visit Single Handle Shower: PosiTemp Valve.
  • Escutcheon Back Plate- After removing the lever handle, remove the two escutcheon screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Gently pull the
  • escutcheon back plate off the wall, the plate may be resistant if there is caulking around the outer edge.

Prior to 2007:  

CHECK VALVE IS HELD IN PLACE WITH A SNAP RING

Removal: 
  1. Water supply to valve (D) must be turned off. (see Preparation
  2. *Remove the handle and escutcheon back plate.
  3. Using snap ring pliers, remove retaining ring (A) from valve body (D).
  4. Grip stop check valve stem (B) with pliers and rotate slightly to remove from valve body (D).
Reinstallation:
  1. Check to be sure that the stop valve stem (B) is fully seated in rubber plug (C).
  2. Insert stop check valve until fully seated beyond retaining ring groove in valve body (D).
  3. Using snap ring pliers, place retaining ring (A) in the valve body (D), making sure that ring is fully seated.
  4. Check the orientation of stop check valve stem for water flow.
    • Flow Stopped: Screwdriver slot vertical
    • Flow Open: Screwdriver slot horizontal
  5. Turn water supply on and check for leaks.
  6. *Reinstall the escutcheon back plate and handle.
After 2007: STAINLESS STEEL U-SHAPED CLIP

CHECK VALVE IS HELD IN PLACE WITH A STAINLESS STEEL U-SHAPED CLIP

Removal: 
  1. Water supply to valve body (D) must be turned off. (see Preparation
  2. *Remove the handle and escutcheon back plate.
  3. Using needle nose pliers pull retaining clip (E) out of the slot in the valve body (D).
  4. With needle nose pliers pull the check stop (F) out of the valve body (D).
Reinstallation:
  1. Slide the check stop (F) into the valve body (D).
  2. Check to be sure that the stop check (F) is fully seated in the valve body (D).
  3. Insert the retaining clip (E) through the top slot, past the check stop and into the bottom slot. (NOTE: bottom of the prongs must be inside the bottom slot to be properly installed).  
  4. Check the orientation of stop check valve stem for water flow.
    • Flow Stopped: Screwdriver slot vertical
    • Flow Open: Screwdriver slot horizontal
  5. Turn water supply on and check for leaks.
  6. *Reinstall the escutcheon back plate and handle.
