How to Tell the Difference Between a 1255, 150257 and 160657 Cartridge

Preparation:

The 1255, 150257 and 160657 cartridge service kits share the same cartridge, handle screw and hex wrench. The key difference is with the cartridge nuts they use. These cartridge nuts are not interchangeable so it's important to identify which one your faucet uses.
How do I Identify a faucet that uses one the these cartridges?
  1. The faucet will have one handle.
  2. The name "Moen" will appear on the front of the faucet.
  3. The faucet would have been installed after 2009.
  4. The faucets integrated water supply lines that protrude out from the bottom of the sink will be a flexible braided material.

If you answered yes to the 4 questions above, you will now need to determine which Cartridge Service Kit your faucet uses, continue to the next section. If your answer to any of the questions above was no, but you still see Moen on the faucet, Contact Moen for further assistance.

Visually Identify your Cartridge Nut by removing the Handle

Preparation:

  • As a safety precaution, the water supply shut off valves must be turned off. If you are unsure how to do this, see article How to Turn Off The Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Please cover the sink drain.
  • Recommended Tools: 3/32" Hex Wrench, Flashlight

Removing the Handle:

  1. Moen faucets will have an access hole containing a handle screw on either the front or back side of the the lever. Select models may have a plug button covering the access hole, if so, carefully pull it out.
  2. Insert a 3/32" hex wrench into the access hole and rotate it counter-clockwise to loosen the handle screw. It is not necessary to remove the handle screw fully from the handle, it only needs to be loosened enough to lift the handle off of the faucet.

View Your Assembly:

Shine a flashlight on the inside of the faucet to determine the shape and material of the cartridge nut. You will see either a black non metallic or a brass cartridge nut. Once you have identified the shape, material and the color of the cartridge nut, use the images to the right to determine which cartridge service kit you need.
