No Escutcheon Screw Conversion (Prior to January 2001)

This article will explain how to convert an escutcheon plate with no escutcheon screws single handle shower (Prior to January 2001) to an escutcheon plate with escutcheon screws.

Preparation:


 There are two different shower valve systems that used this handle configuration. While the handle assembly and disassembly are the same, the valve body and escutcheon plate in your shower may match to Figure A: Standard Valve or Figure B: Moentrol Valve.

Disassembly:

  1. Gently pry the plug button (#1) from the handle and use a 7/64" hex wrench to remove the set screw (#1).
  2. Unthread the Phillips screw (#3) and lift up to remove the adapter and connector (#4).
  3. Pull off the washer and stem extension (#5).
  4. Unthread (optional channel large channel locks may be used) the sleeve (#6) and collar (#7). Note the sleeve and collar may come off as one. Pull off the escutcheon (#8).
  5. Unthread the two Phillips screws (#9) from the mounting adapter assembly (#10) and pull it away from the valve body (#11).
  6. Discard the parts.

Assembly:

Reminder: Images vary by valve body and escutcheon plate. Match to your shower configuration in Figure A: Standard Valve or Figure B: Moentrol Valve above. 

  1. Rotate the stem of the cartridge so the small notch is facing down and slide the D washer (#5) onto the stem of the cartridge.
  2. Slide the stop tube (#6) onto the valve body (#9).
  3. Slide the new escutcheon (#8) onto the valve body and thread the Phillips screws (#7) in.
  4. Position the handle break (#4) into the back of the handle adapter (#3) (See Figure C).
  5. Slide the handle adapter (#3) onto the stem of the cartridge and thread the Phillips screw (#3) in. 
  6. Slide the handle (#2) back onto the stem of the cartridge. 
  7. Position the handle (#2) back onto the handle adapter (#3). Turn the handle (#2) to the off position to reinstall the 7/64" hex screw (#1) .
