Two Handle 4" Centerset Lever: Hex Screw

Moen produces a variety of two handle bathroom faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the most common handle assemblies referred to as a Hex Screw Lever. This faucet style utilizes a 1224 or 1234 cartridge, which are not interchangeable.

Preparation:

Version 1: 1224 Cartridge

*The cartridge (#3) is white plastic.

Version 2: 1234 Cartridge

*The cartridge stem (#3) is metal.

Disassembly:

  1. Using a 3/32" Hex wrench, loosen the set screw (#1) until the handle (#2) lifts off.
  2. Remove the handle (#2).

To replace the cartridge for Version 1, see article 1224 Cartridge: Two Handle 4" Centerset Bathroom Faucets.

To replace the cartridge for Version 2, see article 1234 Cartridge: Two Handle 4" Centerset Bathroom Faucets.

Assembly:

  1. Version 1: The top of the cartridge stem matches the profile inside the handle. Use pliers to adjust the cartridge stem if needed. Place the handle (#1) on the faucet. Version 2: The handles must be assembled in in the off position. To accomplish this, place the handle on top of the cartridge stem and rotate to the off position. If the handle is not facing the correct direction, lift it off, turn it to the correct direction and place back on the cartridge stem.
  2. Tighten the set screw (#2) with a 3/32" Hex wrench.
