Moen Manual Flush Valve Troubleshooting:

Symptom: Handle Assembly/ Pin Lever is sticking, hard to flush, or handle exhibits extended reset time:

Solution: Re-lubricate Handle Assembly

  • Apply grease liberally to both O-Rings (3) in the Handle Assembly (F).
Symptom: Loud noise at shutoff:

Solution:  Adjust Angle Stop Cap

  • Remove the Angle Stop Cap (H) from the elbow
    • Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the Angle Stop Cap (H) off.
  • Turn the Screw (5) clockwise.
  • Test the flush
  • Continue adjusting until the hard shutoff noise is eliminated
Symptom: The Moen Manual Flush Valve will not shut off or has an extremely long flush cycle:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet

Solution 1: Inspect the Interior Piston Cap Assembly, O-Rings, and Valve Body

  • Using a 5/64" hex wrench, loosen and remove the set screw from the Cap Assembly (C)
    • Remove the Cap Assembly (C
  •  Using a 3/8" hex wrench, loosen and remove the set screw from the Interior Piston Cap Assembly (D)
    • Remove the Interior Piston Cap Assembly (D)
  • Lift, remove and inspect the Piston (E)
    • Replace the Piston (E) if any seals are missing, worn, or damaged
  • Inspect inside walls of the Valve Body (2) for scratches, grooves, or indents
    • The interior surface of the Valve Body (2) should be smooth to allow proper sealing. If the damage is too extensive the unit may need to be replaced.
  • For instructions on replacing the Piston (E), see How to replace the Piston and Exterior Cap on a Manual Flush Valve.
Symptom: Flush Valve Tube/ Discharge Tube has vertical movement above the Top Spud Assembly:

Solution: Secure the Flush Valve Tube

  • Tighten the Spud Nut (6) until the Flush Valve Tube (J) no longer moves vertically
Symptom: The Moen Manual Flush Valve is hard to disassemble:

Solution: Depressurize the Valve Assembly

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet

  • Press the Handle Assembly (F) down to relieve pressure

If pressure remains:

  • Using a 5/64" hex wrench, loosen and remove the set screw from the Cap Assembly (C)
    • Remove the Cap Assembly (C
  •  Using a 3/8" hex wrench, loosen and remove the set screw from the Interior Piston Cap Assembly (D)
    • Remove the Interior Piston Cap Assembly (D)
  • Lift, and reseat the Piston (E) to fully depressurize the valve
Symptom: Nothing happens when the Moen Manual Flush Valve's handle is depressed:

Solution 1: Verify incoming water supply

  • Confirm the water supply is turned on

Solution 2: Re-Lubricate the Handle Assembly O-Rings

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet

  • Check grease on the O-Rings (3) in the Handle Assembly (F
  • Apply additional grease if dry
  • Back out the Handle Retaining Nut (4) then reinstall
  • Test flush operation after reassembly

Symptom: Extremely low flush volume:

Solution: Verify supply line size and water pressure

  • Verify the Supply Line size
    • Minimum required size: 3/4 in (0.75 in)
  • Confirm water pressure
