1222 Cartridge: Single Handle Shower- PosiTemp

This article will give step-by-step instructions on how to replace a 1222 cartridge in a single handle PosiTemp valve shower.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Large Pliers or Channel Locks, Needle Nose Pliers, Phillips Screwdriver
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit solutions.moen.com and select the type you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on handle assemblies associated with that style of product.
  • We recommend covering the drain before beginning so to not lose any parts down the drain.

For more information on the 1222 Cartridge Installation, see video, Installing a 1222 Cartridge.

Disassembly:

1. Remove the retainer clip by using needle nose pliers to slide the retainer clip up (#3) and out from the top of the valve body (#5). Be careful not to drop the retainer clip (#3) behind the wall. *If the retainer clip (#3) inaccessible, use a Phillips screwdriver to unthread the escutcheon screws (#1) and remove the escutcheon plate (#2).

2. Remove the cartridge (#4) by using the plastic twisting tool to rotate the cartridge (#4) a little more than 1/4 of a turn (45 degrees). The cartridge (#4) body will slightly bulge outwards. Remove the twisting tool. Using pliers or channel locks, grab the stem of the cartridge (#4) and pull the cartridge (#4) out. This may require some effort. Note: It is highly recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#5) before installing the new cartridge (#4). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing  for additional details.

Assembly:

1. Lubricate the surface of the oval rubber grommets that are on either side of the cartridge (#4) facing out.

2. To install the new cartridge (#4), make sure the H and C tab is pointing up. Slide the cartridge (#4) into the valve body (#5). Do not rotate the cartridge. The rubber ovals are not permanently affixed and may fall off. Make sure the H&C tab on the cartridge (#4) is flush with the valve body (#5).

3. Gently slide the retainer clip (#3) back through the slot on the brass valve body (#5). If you encounter any resistance, make sure the cartridge (#4) is flush with the valve body (#5). If the retainer clip (#3) cannot be installed for any reason or it appears to be damaged or broken, the water cannot be turned back on to the faucet until the retainer clip (#3)  is replaced.

4. Position the stem of the cartridge (#4) ensuring the "notched" side of the brass stem is facing opposite of the "H&C". To reverse Hot and Cold see article  How to Reverse Hot and Cold for a 1222 Cartridge.
