How to Replace a 116719 Diverter

This article includes detailed instruction on the correct method of installing the 116719 three handle shower diverter cartridge.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Phillips Screwdriver, Pliers
  • We recommend covering the drain before beginning so to not loose any parts down the drain.

Disassembly:

1. Gently pry the handle cap (#1) off.

2. Unthread the Phillips screw (#2) and pull the handle (#3), wall tube (#5), and diverter stem extension (#6) off. If the escutcheon (#4) needs to be removed, please note that there may be putty on the underside of the escutcheon which could cause it to be difficult to remove.

3. Slide the copper clip (#7) out of the valve body. The copper clip (#7) is installed through the slots on the left or right side of the valve body (#9).

4. Using the plastic twisting tool (#10), provided in the 116719 diverter kit to rotate the diverter (#8) 1/4 of a turn (90 degrees) in either direction. This will help loosen the diverter(#8). Remove the twisting tool (#10). Using pliers, grab the stem of the cartridge (#8) and pull the cartridge (#8) out. This may require some effort.

It is recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#9) prior to installing the new cartridge (#8). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

Assembly:

1. Slide the new diverter (#8) into the slot on the left or right side of the brass valve body (#9). Align the two clear plastic tabs on the cartridge with slots on the left and right sides the valve body (#9).

2. Gently slide the copper clip (#7) back into the slot on the left or right sides the valve body (#9) on top of the cartridge (#8). If you encounter any resistance, do not force the copper clip (#7). *If the copper clip (#7) cannot be installed for any reason or appears to be damaged or broken, the water cannot be turned back on to the faucet until the copper clip (#7)  is replaced, see * FAQ's below. Be sure the stem of the cartridge is pulled out in the open position.

3. Follow the numbers in reverse order starting with step 2 in disassembly.

FAQ's

Why won't the cartridge clip fit properly in the valve body or around my Moen cartridge?

Use the twisting tool by applying pressure to push the diverter (#8) completely into the valve body (#9). The plastic tabs on the cartridge (#8) must be flush with the valve body (#9) and the plastic tabs on the cartridge (#8) must be centered on the slots on the left and right sides the valve body (#9).

*If the copper clip (#7) cannot be installed for any reason or appears to be damaged or broken, the water cannot be turned back on to the faucet until the copper clip (#7)  is replaced.

The handle won't fit properly after reassembling.

The tab at the back of the diverter stem extension (#6) is not aligned to the left or right side of the built in tab on the outside the valve body (#9).
