How to Replace a 94543 Diverter

This article includes detailed instruction on the correct method of installing the 94543 three handle shower diverter cartridge.

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Phillips Screwdriver,  Pliers or 3/4 Deep Wall Socket Wrench
  • We recommend covering the drain before beginning so to not loose any parts down the drain.

1. Gently pry the handle cap (#1) off.

2. Unthread the Phillips screw (#2) and pull the handle (#3), wall tube (#5), escutcheon (#4) and diverter stem extension (#6) off. Please note that there may be putty on the underside of the escutcheon which could cause it to be difficult to remove.

3. Use pliers or a 3/4 deep wall socket wrench to unthread the brass diverter nut (#7)  counterclockwise from the valve body (#9) and with pliers pull the diverter stem straight (#8) out.

It is recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#9) prior to installing the new cartridge (#8). See Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.

1. Lubricate the rubber O-ring (both are provided in the diverter service kit) and slide the O-ring onto groove on the diverter stem.

2. Align the diverter (#8) to the left or right of the built in tab inside the valve body (#9). Please note if not properly aligned the cartridge will not install. Once installed thread the brass diverter (#7) nut on.

3. Follow the numbers in reverse order starting with step 2 in disassembly.
