Kitchen Handle: Adapter

Moen produces a variety of Single Handle faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the most common handle assemblies referred to as an Adapter. This mechanism was introduced in 1996 and was used on a select group of products through 2009. The characteristics of the mechanism include a handle rotation range of 180 degrees and a flat cap on the top or a plug button. This faucet style utilizes a 1225 cartridge.

Preparation:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
Recommended Tools: 7/64" Hex Wrench (included in all kits), Phillips Screwdriver, Adjustable Pliers/Wrench

Before You Begin, Confirm The Following:

You were sent a 93980, 100429 and/or 100440 service kit
Your faucet was installed prior to 2009
Confirm your faucet is one of the three categories:

Single Handle Standard Spout Kitchen

Top Mount Handle with Pullout Sprayer

Separate Handle

Confirm Your Handle Type

The faucet categories above were available with two different handle types (A and B) that are assembled differently.

Handle Type A: Flat Cap

Handle Type B: Plug Button

Parts Breakdown

Now that you have confirmed your faucet category and handle type, you're ready to move on to the parts breakdown. The parts breakdown is divided up by handle type (A or B). There are parts and steps specifically designed for each handle type.

Steps

Disassembly

1. Remove handle covering (based on Handle Type A or B).

Handle Type A: Flat Cap

Carefully pry off the handle cap and the temperature indicator (#1A).

Handle Type B: Plug Button

Carefully pull out the plug button (#1B).

2. Using a 7/64" Hex wrench, unthread the handle screw (#1A/B) counter-clockwise. The handle screw (#1A/B) needs to be removed completely.

3. Remove the handle (#1A/B) by lifting it off the faucet.

4. To remove the plastic decorative dome (#2), gently pull up.

5. Unthread the black plastic pivot retainer (#4) by rotating counter-clockwise until it is removed.

6. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unthread the cartridge screw (#3) counter-clockwise.

7. The metal adapter and black plastic connector (#5) will lift off together. If you determine the metal adapter (#5) and/or black plastic connector (#5) are broken, remove all the broken pieces from the faucet.

8. Remove the white or gray plastic pivot stop (#6) by lifting it off the faucet. (Note: You will use the same color pivot stop (#6) in the replacement kit that you removed from the faucet when reassembling.)

9. To remove the retainer nut (#7A/B), position your pliers or channel locks on the two flat sides of the retainer nut (#7A/B). Be careful not to damage the retainer nut (#7A/B). If the threads are damaged, the pivot retainer (#4) will not thread back on during assembly. If this were to happen, the entire handle mechanism kit will need to be replaced.

10. Now that you have removed the retainer nut (#7A/B), turn it upside down. You will either see a white plastic bearing washer (#7A) or a metal wavy washer (#7B).

If you see a white plastic bearing washer (#7A), gently pull it out and proceed to Step 11.

If you see a metal wavy washer (#7B), gently pull it out. You will now need to carefully pull the plastic split bearing washer (#7B) off of the top of the decorative spout receptor. Proceed to Step 11.

11. Remove the D washer (#8) off of the cartridge stem (**).

Assembly

If you had a white plastic bearing washer (#7A):

1. With the protruding lip on the white plastic bearing washer (#7A) on the top (see Image 1), slide it into the groove on the underside of the retainer nut (#7A).

If you had a metal wavy washer (#7B):

1a. Position the plastic bearing washer (#7B) so it rests on the cavity between the brass valve body and decorative receptor.

* The plastic bearing washer (#7B) is designed with a split/break.

1b. Install the metal wavy washer (#7B) by inserting it into the groove on the underside of the retainer nut (#7B).

2. Hand tighten the retainer nut (#7A) clockwise. Once it is secure, being careful not to damage the exterior threads, use pliers on the two flat sides of #7A to tighten an additional 1/4 turn. The retainer nut (#7A) could be black or cream colored.

3. Confirm the position of the cartridge stem (**). Pull up on the cartridge stem (**) and rotate it so the small notch is facing forward. The notch determines the hot (left) and cold (right) location when the handle is rotated. Slide the D washer (#8) onto the cartridge stem (**).

If you notice that the hot and cold are reversed after assembly, you will need to follow the disassembly steps 1-7 and rotate the cartridge stem (**) 180 degrees.

4. Using the same color plastic pivot stop (#6) that was removed from your faucet, install it with the raised edge (A) on top facing the front of the faucet.

5. Snap the black plastic connector (#5) over the horizontal bar at the bottom of the metal adapter (#5) making sure that the smaller hole (A) on the black plastic connector (#5) faces up and the larger hole (B) faces down (see Figure 3).

Place the adapter/connector (#5) down on top of the cartridge stem (**) so the tall side of the metal adapter (#5) sits at the front of the faucet.

6. While holding the adapter (#5) in place, use a Phillips screwdriver to thread the cartridge screw (#3) into the cartridge stem (**). The screw will have Loctite, you may feel some resistance when threading the screw into the cartridge stem (**), we recommend tightening fully to avoid the handle (#1A/B) dropping back down while in the on position.

7. Hold the adapter (#5) in place and thread the black plastic pivot retainer (#4) clockwise to tighten it. Be careful not to damage or cross thread the black plastic pivot retainer (#4). If there is any resistance, stop and confirm that is being installed straight.

8. Align the notches in the plastic decorative dome (#2) with the tabs on the black plastic pivot retainer (#4) and push the plastic decorative dome (#2) down to secure it.

Handle Type A:

9. Confirm the adapter (#5) is at the front of the faucet (6:00 position). The inside of the handle (#1A) will line up with the top of the adapter (#5). Place the handle (#1A) on top of the adapter (#5).

10. Using a 7/64" Hex wrench, thread the handle screw (#1A) clockwise through the top of the handle (#1A).

11. Place the temperature indicator (#1A) on top of the handle (#1A) with the red on the left and blue on the right. Snap the handle cap (#1A) into the handle (#1A).

Handle Type B:

9. Confirm the adapter (#5) is at the front of the faucet (6:00 position). The inside of the handle (#1B) will line up with the top of the adapter (#5). Tilt the adapter (#5) back (to allow access to thread the handle screw (#1B) in) and place the handle (#1B) on top of it.

10. Using a 7/64" Hex wrench, thread the handle screw (#1B) clockwise through the top of the handle (#1B). If you are having difficulties threading the handle screw (#1B) in, tilt the adapter (#5) back and try again.

11. There are two holes on the front of the handle (#1B). Push the plug button (#1B) into the smaller hole on the front of the handle (#1B).
