Kitchen Handle 2H: Top Cap Lever

Moen produces a variety of two handle kitchen faucets. The interior components and assembly are not the same for each model. This article will explain one of the most common handle assemblies referred to as a Top Cap Lever. A characteristic of this mechanism is a round cap on the top of the lever Phillips head screw. This faucet style utilizes a 1224 cartridge.

Preparation:

Disassembly:

  1. Gently pry the cap (#1) off. The temperature indicator (#2)  and the o-ring (#3) will come off with the cap (#1).
  2. Unthread the Phillips screw (#4) and remove.
  3. Lift the lever (#5) off and unthread the handle hub (#6)

To replace the cartridge, see article 1224 Cartridge: Two Handle Kitchen Faucet With Escutcheon.

Assembly:

  1. The top of the cartridge stem (#7) matches the profile inside the lever (#5). Use pliers to adjust the cartridge stem (#7) if needed.
  2. Thread the handle hub (#7) on.
  3. Place the lever (#5) on top of the cartridge stem (#7).
  4. Thread and tighten the Phillips screw (#4).
  5. Push the cap (#1) back in the top of the lever (#5).
