Removing a Stuck 1200 or 1225 Cartridge

This article details the tools needed and gives the step by step instructions on how to remove a 1200 or 1225 Cartridge where the stem of the cartridge came out, but the outer housing of the cartridge is stuck inside the valve body.

Preparation:

  • The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to Turn Off the Water Supply to the Faucet.
  • Recommended Tools: Flathead Screwdriver, Tap Wrench1/2"-13 N.C. or 1/2"-20 N.F., Hardwood Dowel: 3/8" hardwood dowel 1-3/4" long
  • The following instructions assume the handle and associated handle pieces have been removed. For additional details, visit solutions.moen.com and select the type you are repairing. The faucet guide will contain specific information on handle assemblies associated with that style of product.

  1. Remove retainer clip (#3) from valve body (#5).
  2. Screw a 1/2"-13 (N.C) or a 1/2"-20 (N.F.) tap wrench into the inside of the cartridge shell. This operation will cut threads into the internal shell of the cartridge (#2). It may be necessary to hold the cartridge tabs (#4) with a small screwdriver. This will help to prevent the cartridge shell (#2) from spinning in the valve (#5) instead of being forced out.
  3. Remove the tap wrench.
  4. Cut a 3/8" hardwood dowel 1-3/4" long.
  5. Drop the hardwood dowel into the cartridge shell (#2).
  6. Re-thread the tap wrench into the cartridge shell (#2). As you thread the tap wrench back down into the cartridge shell (#2), it will hit the dowel forcing it to the bottom causing the cartridge shell (#2) to reverse out. It may be necessary to hold the cartridge tabs (#4) with a small screwdriver.  This will help prevent the cartridge shell (#2) from spinning in the valve (#5) instead of being forced out.

Note: It is highly recommended to clean and flush the valve body (#4) before installing the new cartridge (#1). See article Valve Body Cleaning and Flushing for additional details.
