Shower Faucet: Low Flow- Vertical Spa 3/4" Exact Temp Valve

This article will help you determine the solution to the problem of a shower exhibiting low flow. This is based on the Vertical Spa valve system.
Symptom Solution

Low Flow: Hot and Cold

A overall reduction in flow from a showering device.

 

  1. Check for blockage in the shower device. The low flow symptom can occur if debris has come through the line and became trapped causing a reduction of flow.

2. Is the flow of water normal with the shower device removed?

All Hot or All Cold Water

 

 

 

The 3/4" Exact Temp Valve utilizes a Thermostatic cartridge. If the system is only providing extreme hot or extreme cold (no mixed water-warm), there are two common causes.

New Installation:

  1. Confirm Installation: A Thermostatic cartridge/valve requires that the hot and cold be plumbed to specific inlets (Hot-left side of valve, Cold-right side of valve). If you determine that the supply lines feeding the valve inlets are reversed, correct the supply lines. Below are two recommendations on how to reverse the supply lines: If the lines are not reversed, move to step 2. 
  • First Recommendation: If your wall to the valve is closed, follow your supply lines to the basement or wherever your main water supply lines to this valve originate, turn off the water supply shut off valves and reverse the supply lines.
  • Second Recommendation: If your wall to the valve is still open, turn off the water supply shut off valves and reverse the supply lines.

2. Clear Check Stops: This valve is equipped with hot and cold check stops. This allows you to shut the water off to the system at the valve. If there is debris in these stops, it can become trapped causing all hot water or all cold water to come through the system. See article Cleaning the Check Stops 130158 and 147209 for additional details. 

Existing Installation:

No Flow

New Installation:

1. Confirm that the check stops are fully open.

2. Replace the cartridge. For replacement assistance see 147208 Cartridge: 3/4" Exact Temp System (After 2009).

Existing Installation:

1. If the valve was recently serviced, confirm the check stops are fully open.

2. Remove the cartridge and rinse away any debris. See article 130156 Cartridge: 3/4" Exact Temp System (Prior to 2009) or 147208 Cartridge: 3/4" Exact Temp System (After 2009) for additional details. If the issue persists, replace the cartridge. See the previous articles.
